Dear Member/Fellow,

Thank you for continuing to support our Society through 2008.

As you know we rely heavily on membership dues, which are our major income stream.

2009 promises some exciting developments: firstly we look forward to the first results brought about by the implementation of the Team 28 recommendations. This promises to bring about improved services that our Society provides to its membership.

Secondly, as you have probably heard by now, our Society will host the 2008 International Astronautical Congress in Glasgow in September. This event alone will expand the profile and visibility of the Society enormously. In addition, much needed funds will be generated enabling further changes to the way we run our business to be considered.

In addition, as we expect some changes in Society staff, we will take this opportunity to undertake a serious review of the roles and responsibilities of the staff in order to capitalise on our new position in a post-Team 28/post-IAC 2008 environment.

Over the last year the Society staff have been extremely busy, not only in managing regular Society functions but also in ensuring that the Congress is an outstanding success. The efforts of our Executive Secretary and her Staff in 2007 and 2008 should not be underestimated. They have done an admirable job and all deserve our congratulations.

On the Committee side the quality and number of events held both at our headquarters and outside continue to be impressive and thanks go to the sterling work of our Programme Committee. In addition, the History Committee have been busy supporting VP Bob Parkinson in the production of a definitive history of the British Interplanetary Society. This book has been a long-time coming and I know many will find its contents very interesting.

I hope that many of you will take up the opportunity to visit us at the IAC in Glasgow. If not, please feel free to call into our headquarters in Vauxhall where you are always welcome when visiting London.

Thank you again for your continued support and I look forward to meeting you at one of our many forthcoming events.

Yours truly,

John Harlow MBE
President
