Dear Member/Fellow,

This year has been difficult for us and a great deal of effort has been put in by members of the Executive committees (Council and Finance & General) in order to assure a robust future for our Society. We have been successful both in re-capitalizing and in putting together a business plan that will see both a sustainable level of activities and a full range of services to our membership. What we rely on is support from you in terms of continued membership. As I outlined in Spaceflight a few months back, it is critical that we maintain an income stream sufficient to fully fund our activities in a healthy manner. That is why, apart from student rates, we unfortunately have to increase our membership and other rates this year. Those who take a second magazine will note that the extra dues for this service have not increased since 2006.

You may be aware of some of the changes that have already occurred and more are to come. As an example we have thought long and hard about how to induce those who regularly buy Spaceflight from the bookshelves to join the Society. From the end of this year it will become financially beneficial for such people to join the Society and get their magazine through us rather than to continue purchasing it over the counter.

Another key point is that a major expenditure of the Society today is postage. We spend in total some £50k a year on all our postage and are taking steps to reduce this without impacting services to members.

We are still the best Society for Astronautics in the World and I look forward to receiving your continued support.

Yours truly,

John Harlow MBE
President
